Fund Free Sanitary Pads For Women Instead Of Male C_ndoms – Govt Urged

The government has been urged to stop the free distribution of c_ndoms and use the resources to provide free sanitary pads for women.

The call was made by Thandikile Mkwananzi, a gender activist who was addressing delegates to the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) conference. She said:

Imagine you have three girls in your family, you add yourself then look at the price of sanitary pads. It becomes a burden and expensive. Then you look around and realise condoms are distributed for free even when sex is a pleasure and by choice.

The government, through Statutory Instrument 264 of 2018, suspended duty on sanitary wear for women for imports done during the period December 1, 2018, to November 30, 2019.

Meanwhile, the price of sanitary pads has remained high and unaffordable for most women with some reports claiming that young girls as young as 9 years old have resorted to the use of contraceptive bills.
