ZESA Expected To Give Namibia More Electricity

Zimbabwe is expected to export 50 megawatts of electricity to Namibia in fulfilment of a 15-year agreement signed between the two countries in 2015.

Zimbabwe power utility, ZESA is currently supplying 80 megawatts to Namibia’s power utility, NamPower.

NamPower, as per the agreement, rehabilitated the Hwange Power Station in Zimbabwe at a cost of US$40m.

As compensation, NamPower is currently importing 12% (80MW) of its electricity from ZESA.

Namibia’s Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Engel Nawatiseb told the media last week that Namibia’s Cabinet had directed NamPower to engage ZESA over the matter. Nawatiseb said:

Cabinet has directed Namibia’s power utility company NamPower and the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) to meet to finalise the on-going negotiations for the supply of an additional 50 megawatts to Namibia.

The development comes when Zimbabwe has a very huge power deficit attributed to shrinking water levels at Kariba Dam and ageing equipment at Hwange Thermal Power Station.

Long long ago, ZESA engaged its South African and Mozambican counterparts, in that order, ESKOM and Hydro  Cahora Bassa in a bid to have more power imports.

Reports suggest that ESKOM has since started to export 400MW whilst Hydro Cahora Bassa has agreed to export 100MW to Zimbabwe.
