Former Minister Prisca Mupfumira Granted $5 000 Bail

Former Tourism and Hospitality Minister Prisca Mupfumira has been granted bail amounting to ZWL$ 5 000 by the High Court.

She is facing corruption charges involving ZWL$ 95 million dating back to the time when she was the Minister of Labour and Public Service.

The ruling was made by High Court Judge, Justice Amy Tsanga, who imposed stringent conditions on Mupfumira’s freedom. Said the judge:

Bail is now a Constitutional right and should be granted to all accused persons unless where there are compelling reasons.

The accused is ordered to deposit $5 000 with the clerk of courts and not to interfere with witnesses in this matter.

Mupfumira was also ordered to report at Avondale police station twice a week and to surrender travel documents.

Justice Tsanga further ordered Mupfumira to surrender title deeds of her Mt Pleasant home, and not to interfere with state witnesses.

Mupfumira was arrested on July 25 this year and her freedom bid has been quashed several times during the two months she had been in remand prison.

Her lawyer, Advocate Thabani Mpofu, convinced the court that Mupfumira was not a flight risk, she is now a grandmother (64 years of age) and had been kept in custody for an indefinite period which is unacceptable and in infringement of her constitutional rights.
