ZIMRA Suspends 36 For Living Beyond Their Expected Lifestyles

Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has reportedly suspended 36 employees for living beyond their expected lifestyles.

The taxman also whose lifestyle audit is still underway, is working in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission to handle internal cases which suggest that individuals got their wealth corruptly.

Zimra Commissioner-General Faith Mazani that the process was also targeting taxpayers whose incomes were questionable. She added:

Between January and June this year, a total of 36 officers were suspended pending investigation following lifestyle audits.

Where criminality is detected, we hand over the cases to the police or other investigating arms.

Already, processes are underway to recover ill-gotten wealth.

Mazani added their officers were failing to explain how they acquired their wealth when their known sources of income suggested that they should have been living different lifestyles.

She added that asset forfeiture which was being done in terms of the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act also targeted the taxpayer.
