ED & Chamisa Told To "Take A Leaf From Mugabe & Tsvangirai"

Zimbabwe Catholics Bishops Conference (ZCBC) has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa and opposition MDC leader, Advocate Nelson Chamisa to emulate the late former President Robert Mugabe and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

ZCBC observed that the duo set aside differences and reached a compromise for the sake of the country when they formed a Government of National Unity (GNU) in 2009.

Archbishop Robert Ndlovu, ZCBC’s president, said that Mugabe had left a legacy of dialogue which Mnangagwa and Chamisa needed to adopt. Speaking to New Zimbabwe, Ndlovu said:

We call for genuine dialogue at various levels of society, dialogue is the only way to realise our good intentions. We need as in 2008 a political dialogue, which will settle the impasse that has reduced our country to two warring camps.

These remarks come when there is a standoff between Mnangagwa and Chamisa over how to have an effective dialogue. They both expressed interest in dialogue, but, they clash on terms and conditions.

Chamisa demands that Mnangagwa’s legitimacy, following last year’s disputed elections, be on the dialogue’s agenda. He also wants an “independent and foreign” convener.

On the other hand, Mnangagwa is adamant that his legitimacy was off the table since he resoundingly won 2018 elections. He has since formed the POLAD, a dialogue platform where several 2018 losing presidential candidates are participants.

Mnangagwa says that he is open for an unconditional dialogue with all stakeholders.

The impasse is believed to be causing and fueling the country’s socio-economic and political crises.
