Worst Ever Famine Threat For Zimbabwe - Report

The Fin24 claims that Zimbabwe is on the verge of the worst ever famine. The publication was basing its article on the UNWFP statistics that say by January next year the country would have run out of maize and nearly 3/4s will continue to require food aid.

According to WFP Country Director Mr Eddie Rowe:

You will have a lot more people hungry in Zimbabwe than ever before, in urban areas the alarm bells were not ringing. While other southern African countries ranging from Namibia to Malawi may need aid, Zimbabwe will be the hardest hit.Their needs won’t be of the magnitude of Zimbabwe the difference is the economy.

The famine has been exasperated by the economic meltdown according to the publication:

Since a parity peg to the U.S. dollar was dropped in February, the local currency has slumped to 13.85 to the dollar, making it the world’s worst performer. That’s slashed spending power in a country where most goods are imported. Zimbabwe is already struggling to find sufficient foreign exchange to fund imports of fuel and wheat.

The government said it will import 800K tonnes of maize to ensure the country is well fed. The famine came as a result of a combination of factors, the erratic rains experienced in the rainy season and the erratic rains that affected the region which usually has surplus cant be ruled out as well.
