"We're Suffering" Citizens Pour Out Their Hearts

Some citizens who spoke to the Daily News have indicated how desperate the Zimbabwean situation has now developed as the economy continues to bite.

They observed with sorrow how prices of commodities have continuously gone up when their sources of income have dwindled or remained stagnant.

They also observed that of the little they earn, they will also lose some to mobile money dealers as they try to convert their electronic money into cash. Withdrawing money from one’s electronic account would require about 40 to 50% of the transaction.

Owing to the current economic crisis, a large number of citizens are no longer able to afford decent meals. Citizens concurred that buying rice was now considered luxury hence the decision to suspend rice for special occasions only.

They also highlighted that sometimes their children are sleeping without eating any food as basic commodities are no longer affordable.

Citizens also complained about transport costs which have gone up by a great margin. One commuter who resides in Domboshava revealed that buses to Domboshawa that used to cost $1 now cost $8 early at peak hours and $6 in the afternoon.

They also noted that the ZUPCO buses which were deployed by the government were not enough to cover the whole population.

They also said that prices of commodities have to go down. They also said that foreign currency rates must also go down.

Citizens blamed the government for their plight saying it was failing to address the issues grounding the country.

They also reported that some shops were now hoarding commodities amidst uncertainty.
