ZESN Urges Political Parties To Deal With Voter Apathy During By-elections

The Zimbabwe Electoral Support Network (ZESN) has urged political parties to improve the quality of their campaign efforts to improve the voter turnout, especially during by-elections.

In its latest report, the independent watchdog noted a low voter turnout during the Glen View South and Mangwe National Assembly constituencies by-elections compared to the 2018 general elections. ZESN said in its report:

The drop in figures of the votes cast during the Glen View South and Mangwe National Assembly by-elections for both Zanu PF and MDC Alliance is a clear indication of voter apathy associated with by-elections.

Political parties should improve the quality of their campaign efforts to support improvement in the turnout of voters during the by-elections.

ZESN recommended that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) should conduct periodic voter registration and establish voter registration centres at the sub-district level to facilitate registration by people who would have attained the age of majority after the previous election.
