I was Taken To A Basement And Electrocuted - Dr Magombeyi

Acting President of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA), Dr Peter Magombeyi said he does not recall exactly what happened to him when he was abducted from his Budiriro home on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old doctor who works at Harare Central Hospital was found on Thursday evening in Nyabira, about 21-miles from Harare.

He spoke over the phone to Voice of America Zimbabwe Service’s Livetalk program on Thursday. He is quoted as saying:

I honestly don’t know how to truly identify myself, but I am Dr Peter Magombeyi, I work at Harare Hospital. That part I’m just so vague about, I need time to recall.

Dr. Magombeyi said the last thing that he remembered is when he was taken by unnamed people to some kind of basement where he received electric shocks. He said:

I remember being in a basement of some sort, being electrocuted at some point, that is what I vividly remember. I, I just don’t remember.

Dr. Magombeyi went missing on Saturday night, 14 September 2019. He sent a message on a WhatsApp group telling his colleagues that he had been abducted by three men.

Prior to his disappearance, Dr Magombeyi was leading a strike by junior doctors, demanding a living wage. He received several threatening messages and at one point was warned that he would soon be swept away by a whirlwind.
