African National Medical Associations Demand Dr Magombeyi's Release {Full Text}

CANMA CONDEMNS THE ABDUCTION OF DR PETER MAGOMBEYI AND CALLS FOR HIS IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Coalition of the African National Medical Associations (CANMA), a coalition of all National Medical Associations in the African region, has received with great dismay and disappointment the news of the unfortunate and senseless abduction on Saturday, 14th September 2019, of Dr Peter Magombeyi, the effervescent President of the Hospital Doctors Association (an affiliate of the Zimbabwe Medical Association).

Since confirming the news of the abduction from the Zimbabwe Medical Association, CANMA has been closely monitoring the situation in Zimbabwe, and supports all actions so far taken by the Zimbabwe Medical Association, the Hospital Doctors Association, the Specialists and Senior Doctors Association, and all other progressive associations, bodies and people of good conscience in Zimbabwe.

While CANMA is not in a position to make a declarative statement on the character and motives of the unscrupulous elements behind this grossly unholy criminal act, CANMA sympathises with the family of Dr Magombeyi, the Zimbabwe Medical Association, the Hospital Doctors Association and all health workers in Zimbabwe, and strongly condemns it in its entirety the senseless abduction of Dr Peter Magombeyi, especially at a time when Dr Peter Magombeyi was leading the determined struggle of his Association for better working conditions of her members in the health sector of Zimbabwe.

Noting the ill and untoward effects of this abduction incident on the health system of Zimbabwe and the country at large, including the psyche and sense of safety of the toiling health workers and citizens of Zimbabwe, CANMA calls on the President and Government of Zimbabwe to take urgent and further steps to secure the safe and quick release of Dr Peter Magombeyi.

CANMA also calls on the security agencies in Zimbabwe to leave no stone unturned in exposing those directly and indirectly connected with this criminal act.

CANMA further calls on the Government of Zimbabwe and indeed all the Governments of all African countries, to take the issue of human resource for health more seriously, especially as Africa still has the worst deficit in human resources for health despite being afflicted with the heaviest disease burden.

CANMA, therefore, calls on African governments to institute appropriate and productive mechanisms for growing, developing, retaining and motivating the human resource for health in their various countries, including the institution of good working conditions, appropriate pay compensation mechanisms, and effective security guarantees.

CANMA looks forward to the quick and safe release of Dr Peter Magombeyi from the evil claws of his abductors and the unfurling of the faces behind the criminal act.
