David Coltart: Abductions Show That Govt Is Driven By Sheer Paranoia

MDC treasurer-general David Coltart says the ongoing abductions of Union leaders and human rights activists are a result of the government’s sheer paranoia.

Coltart’s remarks follow the abduction of the Acting President of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA), Peter Magombeyi on Saturday night. He said:

An activist friend who fears abduction himself and who has experienced strange things happening at his house recently has just posed the following question to me: “What is driving these abductions now?” My answer follows.

It is driven by the sheer paranoia of the Mnangagwa regime. They fear demonstrations will escalate into something they can’t control and so will try to intimidate the second tier of leadership whose names are not as recognizable as say, Biti, Ncube or Chamisa.

They did the same against ZAPU although that wasn’t driven by paranoia, just a sheer lust for power. Now they hope this will have a chilling effect and deter activists from protesting against the economic chaos caused by the regime.

They are reluctant to abduct high profile people because that attracts too much international interest and condemnation.

So it is the second tier of leadership, the people whose names are not instantly recognizable internationally, who have to suffer these grave assaults.

These are new unprecedented levels of paranoia. But it is further complicated by the fact it is difficult to nuance a general blunt instrument of intimidation.

Sadly experience shows that they have never been held to account and their calculation is that they can act with impunity.
