President Mnangagwa Calls For Peace During Mugabe's Funeral

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appealed to Zimbabweans to be peaceful as the nation mourns the passing on of former president, Robert Mugabe.

Speaking after the arrival of Mugabe’s body at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport from Singapore where he died on Friday last week, Mnangagwa said:

Today as we leave here, our icon and commander will first pass through One Commando where the military will say their prayer and the body will proceed to the residence of our former President – the Blue Roof – today. Thereafter the programme will be announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage.

May I, therefore, appeal to you all to be peaceful and to be loving, united, Zimbabwe is ours together. We are one people and one nation.

Mugabe’s body touched down at 1535 hours aboard a chartered flight accompanied by his widow, former First Lady Grace Mugabe, Vice President Kembo Mohadi and other senior Government and Zanu-PF officials.

Mnangagwa’s remarks come as some members of the opposition MDC have threatened to demonstrate during Mugabe’s funeral to show displeasure in the way the late veteran leader treated them during his tenure of office.

The remarks also come amid reports that some members of the Mugabe family are still angry with the government over the way Mugabe was removed from power in 2017.
