Shops Run Out Of Mealie-Meal As Prices Go Up
Bulawayo shops are reportedly running out of mealie-meal at a time when prices of the commodity have also gone up.
A short survey that was conducted by the Chronicle suggested that most of the major shops including TM Pick n Pay, Choppies and Food 4 less along Herbert Chitepo Steet and OK Zimbabwe Jason Moyo branch had run out of mealie-meal.
Meanwhile, those shops which still had the commodity had already increased its price, a move viewed as a direct response to the increase in the price of maize.
The Chronicle reports that Greens Supermarket, a 10kg bag of roller meal was being sold at between $43,70 and $48 depending on the brand. The prices were ranging from $25 to $30 for the same barely a week ago.
Consumers who suspected that retailers were hoarding the commodity told The Chronicle that the shortage started last week.
