UEFA will tonight announce the winner of the UEFA Women’s Player and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year and UEFA Champions League positional award winners in Monaco.
The announcement is on the same night as the Champions League group stage draw.
Names up for the prize are Portugal star, Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi and Liverpool defence maestro, Virgil Van Dijk.
The selection was done by a jury of coaches and journalists.
Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric is the current holder of the award after winning the Champions League and leading Croatia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Whilst it is Van Dijk’s first time to be shortlisted for the prize, Ronaldo and Messi, in that order, have since the inception of the Uefa Men’s Player of the Year award in 2011 won the prize three times (2014, 2016, 2017) and twice (2011 and 2015).
The Liverpool defender had a good season with the Reds which culminated in a Champions League victory.
