ZEC "Cleaning Up" The Voters' Roll Ahead Of 2023 Elections

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has revealed that it is in the process of sanitising the voters’ roll.

The Commission also said that ongoing by-elections are presenting ZEC with an opportunity to address all grey areas.

Speaking to the TheChronicle in an interview recently, ZEC chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba, said:

The by-elections actually give us an opportunity to clean the voter’s rolls for the constituencies or wards where they are held. As you know we’re now polling station-specific.

We have statistics on hand and we’re actually fine-tuning our process of cleaning up the voters’ roll.

She added that the Commission consolidated recommendations from various stakeholders and forwarded them to the inter-ministerial task force, which is headed by Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi and deputised by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo.

Chigumba’s remarks come as the opposition MDC has vowed that it will not again participate in any election presided over by the current ZEC team.

MDC accuses the Commission of favouring the ruling ZANU PF.

The opposition party also claims that the voters’ roll contains some “ghosts” as names within it are of people who died several years ago.
