A traditional leader from Matebeleland, South, Chief Mathema, has said that there are more issues to the case of Chief Nhlanha Ndiweni of Ntabazinduna than just the destruction of fence worth ZWL$300. Mathema said:
In my view, there was a political hand behind the incarceration of Chief Ndiweni. Traditional leaders derive their power from the communities they lead, culture and norms. You saw that he was arrested together with 23 of his subjects, which shows he had the support of his people who didn’t condone adultery in their community.
Something went wrong; he shouldn’t have gone to jail. There are a lot of things which went wrong; he shouldn’t have been jailed for a value of $300 bond.
His remarks are a strong redolence to those of Ndiweni has all the way been saying that the case was a way of Obert Mpofu, ZANU PF bigwig, of punishing him for a lawsuit he filed against him sometime back.
Ndiweni was convicted and jailed for 18 months for destroying the property of his subject.
The subject had been banished for disobeying a court order but refused to vacate his home.
Meanwhile, opposition MDC has called upon the nation to come out in their numbers to show support to Ndiweni who will be appearing in court for his bail hearing today.
