"We Call On SADC & The International Community To Intervene" As MDC MP House Is Shot

Opposition MDC has called upon the SADC and international community to intervene in the case of party legislator whose house was shot last week.

MDC legislator for Marondera, Caston Matewu, issued a statement with regards the shootings at his house saying they happened around 2:30 am.

The shootings follow a spate of abductions and arrests of MDC members, human rights defenders and government critics.

MDC believes that the State which doing less to address these human rights violations was implicated hence the need to approach the regional board and the international community.

MDC Marondera spokesperson Farai Nyandoro said:

Marondera central district condemns in the strongest terms the barbaric attack and destruction of property that took place at MP Matewu’s residence. We call on SADC and the international community to intervene in order to rein in this parallel junta.

Reports of abductions and torture in the country escalated a few days before the MDC’s series of protests which were scheduled to begin on the 16th of August 2019.

Analysts believe that the developments were meant to send a signal to likely government critics that the same could be done to them.

Most cases have not been resolved with the police saying they are still investigating the issue.
