"US$331,5M Is Inadequate", Govt Reviews Up Humanitarian Food Support Appeal

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister, July Moyo, said that the government has reviewed the humanitarian food support appeal up to US$464 million.

He noted that the initially proposed figure, US$331.5 million was not adequate. He said:

He added that on the same day, the Revised Zimbabwe Humanitarian Appeal amounting to US$331,5 million, which is targeting the multi-sectoral humanitarian needs of 3,7 million people, out of the 5,1 million people, who had been identified as in need of humanitarian assistance, was launched in Harare.

The Revised Zimbabwe Humanitarian Appeal covers the period July 2019 to April 2020 that is up to the end of the next lean season. The overall requirements for the period February 2019 to April 2020 now stands at US$464 million.

Earlier, President Mnangagwa announced that the country needed about 800 000 tonnes of maize so as to head off projected starvation.

The United Nations has also joined the country in asking for assistance as a huge number of citizens face starvation.

The USA and the UK have since responded by pledging millions towards amelioration of hunger.
