"U.S. Concerned About More Abductions, Violence & Intimidation In Zim", US Embassy

The United States of America (US) said that it remains concerned about more kidnappings, violence and intimidation in Zimbabwe.

These developments do not show that the government of Zimbabwe is committed to political reforms, the US said.

Through its embassy in Harare, the US urged the government of Zimbabwe to respect the people’s human rights and observe the rule of law. It said in a statement:

We remain concerned about more abductions, violence and intimidation in Zimbabwe….doesn’t reflect the government’s commitment to reforms.

Freedom of speech and peaceful assembly are #humanrights protected by Zimbabwe’s constitution. #Respecttheconstitution.

The US’s concerns follow a spike in reports of individuals who have been abducted and tortured by masked gunmen in the dead of the night over the past few weeks.

Among the victims are president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), Obert Masaraure, a human rights activist, Tatenda Mombeyarara, several MDC activists, and last night, Bus Stop TV satirist, Samantha Kureya was abducted and tortured.

The government has blamed what it calls a “Third Force” for the abductions and torture.
