"Mnangagwa Over Promised And Under Delivered" - UZ Political Analyst

Political Science lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe, Eldred v Masunungure, has claimed that the general populace was angry with president Emmerson Mnangagwa because his election promises do not tally with what he has achieved so far. Speaking to Zim Morning Post, Masunungure said:

He over-promised and under-delivered and that is a source of anger, what we are witnessing in demos being banned. Those are expressions of despair, expressions which are not finding an outlet, 

The public has been feeling the pain with the exception of a small clique at the top of the business, political domain and economic domain. It may be right to say that he inherited a corpse but he promised to resuscitate that corpse. With salaries stagnant and prices skyrocketing there is a sense of pessimism which is a groundswell for discontent.

In his inaugural speech, Mnangagwa made several promises including “jobs, jobs, jobs, fighting corruption head-on, addressing the cash crisis forthwith, reviving the crumbling industry, compensating former farm owners, improving citizens’ living standards”, among other issues.

The state of affairs, however, suggest that living standards have been deteriorating fast since his ascendancy to power.

Other challenges have emerged or worsened since he took over from his former boss, Robert Mugabe.

The country now has a huge power deficit, a problem the country had last experienced several years ago.

The soaring inflation, which risks reviving the memories of hyperinflationary 2008, has eroded workers’ salaries.

The citizenry feels disillusioned as some argue that we were promised “heaven but now we are in hell”.
