The arrests come when the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa is saying that it is committed to ensuring freedom of speech and association.

The government is also saying that media reforms are underway and that democratic space has since been expanded since the departure of former President Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe was often accused of repressing freedom of speech and the torture and abduction of the missing journalist, Itai Dzamara, was often cited as indicative of the repression.

During the opposition MDC demonstration that was scheduled for the 16th of August, another journalist was arrested when he was trying to help a woman whom the police had reportedly injured whilst dispersing protesters.
