Bustop TV's Samantha Kureya Tortured & Dumped In Crowborough - Report

Social media reports indicate that popular comedian, Samantha Kureya (Gonyeti) of Bustop TV was found beaten up, tortured and dumped in Crowborough.

Gonyeti was then taken to Marimba police station by her brother. A Twitter handle @ComradeFatsooo tweeted:

Gonyeti has been found in Crowborough North. She had been seriously beaten by the masked men who abducted her. She is now with her brother & Marimba police. The whole of Team Magamba stands with you, Team @bustoptv! They cannot silence the people’s laughter ✊✊

Prominent journalist and award-winning filmmaker, Hopewell Chinon’o challenged Kirsty Coventry, the Sport and Arts Minister to do something. Wrote Chin’ono:

Gonyeti is a comedian, an artist at @bustoptv. She was abducted by gunmen, beaten up, tortured & dumped. What has this country come to?! @KirstyCoventry, you are the Arts cabinet minister, we will not get ahead of you, let us wait and see what you will do! This is absolutely tragic.

Reports of Gonyeti’s abduction surfaced on Wednesday night with the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe tweeting about the alleged abduction;

Reports coming from @bustoptv are that Samantha Kureya a.k.a. Gonyeti was tonight abducted from her home by unidentified masked men with AK assault rifles her whereabouts are currently unknown and MISA is assisting with efforts to locate her.

Earlier this year, Samantha and her colleague were temporarily detained and fined for a 2016 comic skit which the Police said amounted to public nuisance. During their detention, the pair were warned that @bustoptv skits were getting political.

According to Dewa Mavhinga, a political commentator, just hours before her abduction and torture, Kureya had been accused of using comedy to meddle in politics by one Nomatter Magaya. Wrote Mavhinga:

Just hours before the abduction, a threat of abduction and torture had been made against Samantha Kureya (Gonyeti) by one Nomatter Magaya who accused Gonyeti of “using comedy to meddle in politics.”

MISA Zimbabwe also gave an update on Gonyeti’s whereabouts:

The latest update is that Samantha/ Gonyeti was tortured and then dropped off at Crowborough North. Police from Marimba police station are on their way to her location with her brother.

Samantha has been located and she is with her brother and police from Marimba police station. Unfortunately, she was severely beaten and the extent of injuries is yet to be ascertained. This unwarranted and illegal abduction is just shameful. Totally uncalled for!
