How & Why ZANU PF Made Opposition MDC Illegitimate

Johannesburg-based social and political commentator, Tafi Mhaka, has claimed that the opposition MDC is viewed as illegitimate in various quarters of society due to the way the ruling ZANU PF branded and presented it to the public.

The MDC was formed in 1999 when the country’s economy sinking. It’s formation also coincided with the fast track land reform which is believed to have attracted sanctions from Western countries.

The country is yet to pick many dividends from the land reform programme, therefore, it was easy for ZANU PF to put the blame on the MDC which has been a critic of the modus operandi used to redistribute land.

In the eyes of many Zimbabweans, the MDC became a puppet of Western powers proof being visits by party senior officials to Europe and America.

Mhaka also said that State security is being used to perpetuate ZANU PF agenda of discrediting the MDC. He said:

The pitiful depictions bear testimony to the unsubstantiated illegitimacy foisted upon the MDC Alliance by significant sections of the uniformed forces and, by extension, society.

Many gullible police and army recruits come from poverty-stricken Zanu-PF strongholds, disadvantaged communities where Mugabe’s reckless misrepresentations about the MDC still carry massive political currency and continually provoke a deadly hatred for Zimbabwe’s largest opposition party. Additionally, a majority of Zanu-PF supporters remain convinced the MDC Alliance is behind the financial sanctions supposedly crippling Zimbabwe’s economy.
Mhaka advises the MDC to build good relations with progressive war veterans and those in leadership positions in the security sector.
