MDC Plans To Stage Demonstrations In Gweru

MDC official in the Midlands province plan to go ahead with streets protests in Gweru this week to force the government to urgently address the economic implosion that has been going unchecked for some time.

In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com over the weekend, MDC national executive member and Mbizo MP Settlement Chikwinya said:

We remain disturbed by the heavy-handedness in which the police exhibited on the 16th of August 2019 at the Harare demonstration but our people have resolved to come out in their numbers to march in peace.

The harsh economic conditions which have seen the citizens going for 20 hours without electricity, winding fuel queues, deplorable civil servants salaries and meagre pensions against spiralling basic commodity prices are more painful than a baton stick from an underpaid policeman.

We expect the police to protect the citizens and not beat up peaceful old women and men exercising their constitutional right to demonstrate.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has, however, banned a couple of the MDC’s planned protests in recent days.

On Thursday last week, the police blocked a demonstration that was set for the 16th of August in Harare.

Meanwhile, police in Bulawayo on Sunday banned another MDC demonstration that was set for this Monday.

Other demonstrations are planned for Mutare and Masvingo.
