"We May Not Be Able To Implement Observer Mission Reports If They Violate The Constitution" - Govt

The government has said that it was committed to implementing the recommendations by various observer mission reports on electoral reforms and the August 1, 2018, shootings.

This was revealed by Justice permanent secretary, Virginia Mabiza, who said that the inter-ministerial committee chaired by Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has been meeting to polish up the matter before submitting its full set of recommendations next month for action by Cabinet.

Speaking to the News Day, Mabiza said:

Key to the recommendations is the issue of compensation, the issue of bringing to account those that may be held responsible for the shootings of August 1. The various observer missions made a lot of recommendations as proposing electoral amendments to our laws. We have taken most of the recommendations on board and it’s now up to Cabinet to approve what has come from our committee.

This comes as the government has been accused of developing cold feet as far as bringing to book the soldiers and police responsible for the August 1, 2018, shootings.

Some analysts have also criticised for failing to implement the electoral reforms a year after the country held a disputed election.

The opposition MDC argues that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is compromised as it is biassed towards the ruling ZANU PF. The MDC, as a result, has vowed that no election shall be held until the current ZEC team was removed.
