Simon Rudland, Co-Owner Of Gold Leaf Tobacco Critical After Assassination Attempt In Johannesburg

The co-owner of Gold Leaf Tobacco, Simon Rudland is reported to be in a critical condition following an assassination attempt in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

The shooting incident was confirmed to News24 on Thursday (today) by Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (FITA) chairperson, Sinenhlanhla Mnguni. He said:

It comes as a shock to all of us. At this stage police are investigating. This is something we take seriously.

News24 reports that Rudland was attacked by two assailants who were waiting in a white car at the offices of FITA in Norwood, Johannesburg.

One of the assailants reportedly fired nine shots with a handgun to Rudland who had arrived with his lawyer for a FITA meeting. The shots were fired to Rudland’s head area.

One bullet struck him in the neck. He has since been hospitalised and is being kept in intensive care. The source said the suspects have been identified by way of CCTV.
