Scores Of Zimbabweans Flock Into Botswana As The Economy Bites More
Scores of Zimbabweans are reportedly escaping the country into neighbouring Botswana as the economic crisis deepens.
There have been no signs that there will be an economic turnaround anytime soon as the government has several financial obligations.
Some of the immigrants do not have the required travelling documents, a scenario which forces them to illegally cross the Zimbabwean border.
The Registrar General’s office has been facing huge challenges in producing passports with reports suggesting that only 60 passports were being issued per day nationwide.
VOA Studio7 reports that in 2018 alone, about 29 000 Zimbabweans were arrested and deported from Botswana. The number denotes a sharp increase from 22 000 who were arrested in 2015.

Prosper Kandanhamo, an accountant who also went to Botswana illegally, revealed that lack of employment opportunities compelled him and several others to leave the country. He lamented:
It’s better to be caught by the police. At the (police) cells, they will give you food and transport to the border. They deport you, and you find your way back (rather) than to go back to Zimbabwe.
The trend is almost the same as the number of Zimbabweans who have been fleeing to South Africa.
This has been exposing them to great risks including family splits, working in unsafe working conditions and in sometimes death as and when xenophobic attacks erupt.
