Civil Servants Demand COLA, Warn Govt Of "Catastrophic Consequences" For Failure To Respond

The Apex Council, the umbrella body which brings together civil service unions, has expressed anger over the government’s failure to respond to its position paper submitted to the Ministries of Finance and Public Service.

In a letter signed by the Union’s chairperson, Cecilia Alexander, it urged the government to immediately convene an NJNC meeting on COLA, and failure will result in catastrophic consequences.

Here is the letter:

The Apex Council speaking on behalf of all civil servants in Zimbabwe is amazed at the Government of Zimbabwe’s silence on the urgent issue of an overdue Cost of Living Adjustment.

Following last month’s cushioning allowance, in itself an acknowledgement by the Government of the incapacitation of workers, it was the expectation of all that the government would move quickly to convene an NJNC to respond to the workers’ position paper with a view to effecting a Cost of Living Adjustment immediately.

What we have gotten from the Government instead is a wall of silence. The Government cannot bury its head in the sand and pretend that the incapacitation it tried to address with the cushioning allowance will somehow go away when inflation has continued to ravage incomes.

Also, disturbing is the Government’s silence on the Apex Council’s position paper and the petition recently delivered to the Ministers of Public Service and Finance respectively.

The Government must be reminded that ignoring workers’ demands is in contravention of Section 65 of the Constitution, which accords workers the right to consult and be consulted and indeed the right to a fair and reasonable wage.

We urge the government to immediately convene an NJNC meeting on COLA which we legitimately demand. Failure to do so will doubtlessly have catastrophic consequences on the nation at large.

The situation is dire. Workers are incapacitated and pretending otherwise is not going to help.
