ZANU PF stalwarts are reportedly stampeding to land the Vice president post which is currently occupied by indisposed Constantino Chiwenga.
Some believe that the deterioration of Chiwenga’s health renders him incapable of holding public office.
ZANU PF insiders who spoke to Zimbabwe Independent suggested that Defence Minister, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, is the front runner in the race.
They also said that the Minister of Information, Monica Mutsvangwa is in the race.
Military boss, Valerio Sibanda’s name has also been dragged into the race. His only major hurdle is believed to be Vice President, Kembo Mohadi, whom he shares the ZAPU/ZIPRA roots with.
Earlier reports also suggested that Foreign Affairs Minister, Sibusiso Moyo, also wants the post. His military background makes him favourite for the security sector that has always wanted representation in government.
Speaking to Zimbabwe Independent, the unnamed sources said that President Mnangagwa could have appointed Muchinguri Kashiri when he first appointed his deputies had the army not insisted on Chiwenga’s selection. They said:
She is trusted by ED because of her unwavering loyalty. She has been in Cabinet for a long time. She also has impeccable liberation war credentials which make her the ultimate favourite. Her other advantage seems to be that women in the party have been clamouring for a position in the top three and, being in the presidium already, she is very much set for it.
Other reports suggested that jailed Tourism Minister, Priscah Mupfumira was also in the race before her arrest.
