The Ministery of Information has revealed that there over 92 000 passports booklets at the Registrar General’s office that are still waiting to be printed. This comes after the Home Affairs Minister, Cain Mathema some weeks ago revealed that the passport backlog dates back to 2018. Mathema had projected in the second half of July that in “two to three weeks”, the situation would have improved. Reports suggest that the total number of passports produced nationwide is 250 against a demand of 3000 daily. Harare Registrar General offices are reportedly producing an average of 12 per day.
Passport production is done locally, however, consummables such as gold foil & security thread are imported & require foreign currency. At present, the national production centre has over 92 000 booklets in store awaiting personalisation upon acquisition of necessary consummables pic.twitter.com/kgnLEaRl5M
