Mozambique Govt, Rebel Group Sign Ceasefire Agreement

The government on Tuesday lauded the signing of a peace deal between the Mozambican government and former rebel group, the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO).

Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi signed the ceasefire agreement with RENAMO leader Ossufo Momade. The signing of the ceasefire deal is expected to finally end the violence that had plagued the country since independence from Portugal in 1975.

Speaking to journalists in Harare on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, said:

His Excellency President Mnangagwa informed Cabinet that the Government of Mozambique and the Renamo rebel movement were due to sign a ceasefire agreement today (yesterday).

The agreement will entail the full integration of Renamo into Mozambique’s civil and public administration systems. Cabinet applauds this positive development, which is a significant step towards sustainable regional peace and stability.
