New Tollgate Fees Infringing Citizens Of Their Right To Travel - MDC Legislator

A member of the opposition MDC led by advocate Nelson Chamisa, Settlement Chikwinya, who is also the legislator for Mbizo has said that the new tollgate fees infringe on the citizens’ right to travel freely.

Chikwinya argued that public transport operators will raise charges for their trips thereby creating a trickle-down effect.

Speaking to the News Day, MDC secretary for transport and logistics said that it is the citizens who will suffer in the long run. Chikwinya said:

As things stand in the proposed budget, a married teacher cannot travel using public transport to see his or her spouse in Bulawayo or Harare using their salary. Basically, if approved, it means public transport in Harare or Bulawayo will now cost more than $150 per trip for a single person. A light motor vehicle will incur $50 on toll fees alone. That is ridiculous.

Chikwinya said that an MDC government will be sensitive to the plight of the people.
