Mupfumira Intended To Run Away To South Africa - Investigating Officer

An investigating officer in the case of Tourism minister, Priscah Mupfumira, has claimed that the accused intended to escape to South Africa upon realising that she was about to be detained.

The officer, Trust Chinembiri, said that Mupfumira only turned herself to the police after realising that she had nowhere to run. Chinembiri said:

She (Mupfumira) only handed herself over to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) upon realising that there was nowhere to run to. She then sent her lawyers to Zacc saying she would avail herself the following day.

She wanted to leave on July 25. She was not prepared to face arrest as she even planned to travel to South Africa with some Chinese (nationals).

Chinembiri revealed of the intended escape whilst giving testimony against granting of bail of Mupfumira who is currently in custody.

Mupfumira was arrested on July 26 by ZACC over alleged seven counts of corruption and criminal abuse of office during her tenure at NSSA.

The State in opposing Mupfumira’s bail said that Mupfumira would interfere with witnesses and also stated that she had evaded arrest on several occasions.

Despite Mupfumira’s lawyer, Advocate Lewis Uriri, arguing that she deserved bail which was her constitutional right, the court evoked Section 32 of the Criminal and Procedure Act which prohibited Mupfumira from applying for bail until 21 days had elapsed.
