The Magnitude Of Increases Is Frightening - Workers Fume Over Increased Charges

Workers have fumed over Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube’s decision to raise charges for government services without adjusting civil servants’ salaries.

They said that the Minister did not consult them to hear their position so that he would come with charges which are in sync with their plight.

Speaking to the News Day, Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) secretary-general Japhet Moyo said:

Ncube did not ask for our input when he put together his mid-term budget. We could have highlighted the plight of the workers with his austerity policies.
Probably it was deliberate that he never sought our views because he wanted to go it alone and continue to impoverish the most vulnerable people like workers.

The magnitude of increases is frightening when you compare with stagnant salaries. Obviously, the workers would have to show their disappointment through some form of action.

Moyo added that the labor organisation was now going to take it to the streets to demonstrate against the development.

His remarks were echoed by Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe leader, Obert Masaraure, who questioned the logic behind raising charges by about 500% when salaries remained stagnant.

Workers fury comes after the Finance Minister in his 2019 Mid-Year Budget Review Statement and Supplementary Budget on Thursday proposed an increase in a number of fees and charges for government services including electricity tariffs.
