"MDC Leaders Are Not Immune To Arrests" - MDC

The opposition MDC has said that its members were not immune to arrests. The party also said that it will comply with any prosecution process in the even that it is properly initiated by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

Party spokesperson, Daniel Molokele, said that the party has problems with those who speculate that MDC leadership was corrupt. Molekele said:

But if ever there is an arrest, we are not saying that MDC leaders are immune to arrests. If due process of the law is followed, obviously we will respect that.

But as far we are concerned, our top leaders are not corrupt people. As far we are concerned, we have credible leaders who are going to help Zimbabwe move forward…

His remarks come when some politicians including deputy President of MDC-T led by Dr Thokozani Khupe, advocate Obert Gutu, have argued that unnamed MDC bigwigs abused public funds during the Government of National Unity era.

Molekele is also sceptical of president Mnangagwa’s renewed anti-corruption commission. He notes that nothing happened was done to individuals allegedly externalised funds. This was despite the expiry of amnesty he had offered to them on condition that they bring back the money.

Recently, the newly appointed ZACC was given arresting powers and has so far arrested two senior government officials over corruption allegations.

Some argue that the arrests are a decoy meant to divert the attention of the nation away from real teething economic issues. They also predict that the arrested will be released without any conviction.
