FULL THREAD: I Hope People Don't Seek To Replicate The System They Struggle Against Today- Wes Beal

Wes Beal, a Database Developer at a leading technology provider, NGP VAN, Inc in Alexandria, Minnesota, USA has said that lack of tolerance amongst Zimbabweans was one factor that could choke efforts to transform the country into becoming the desired society. Below we present a full thread of his posts on microblogging site, Twitter.

1) “Why betray us by showing love towards people in Zanu?” Some of the replies to @Wamagaisa ‘s tweet yesterday echo that sentiment. Its been bugging me all day.

2) First, “love” is misconstrued. It doesn’t mean agreement. It doesn’t mean support. In the context of this discussion, it only meant showing civility. Some of the worst enemies in the world are able to show civility toward one another.

3) Among some in Zimbabwe (and the world, but we’re talking about Zimbabwe right now), this is unacceptable. Showing anything less than hatred and contempt for the other side is frowned upon. The anger that fuels this sentiment is entirely understandable.

4) People have lost loved ones, opportunities, blood. People have suffered under Zanu, & they’re angry about it. But this isn’t just a trait among MDC supporters. The same behavior is seen among Zanu supporters, toward anyone who treats members of the opposition with civility

5) The fact that this attitude exists on both sides is key to the challenge Zimbabwe faces, & more complex than I am able to express in a twitter thread, no matter how long I make it. I just don’t have a good enough grasp of the issue myself to boil it down succinctly.

6) Who Zimbabwe exists for is central to how the nation has been misruled for over 120 years. In Zimbabwe, “Unity” is an ugly word. It’s used over and again to grind those with different views under the heal of those in power.

7) That includes institutions other than the state. It includes the MDC. This attitude must be done away with. The anger, including the legitimate anger born of grief, needs to find its proper target: the system.

8) Showing civility towards the other side is one small part of how this cycle is broken. That doesn’t mean you discard your values. It doesn’t mean you agree with them. It doesn’t even mean you forgive them for wrongs committed.

9. My hope for Zimbabwe is that a new government is created. One that does not simply replace the old one. One that is different. One that is for all Zimbabweans, even those that support Zanu-PF.

10) My hope for people is that they do not seek to replicate the very system they struggle against today. That people’s anger find the proper target: this system, this definition by exclusion of who Zimbabwe is for. That people learn that unity via exclusion is not the answer.
