Govt Redeploys Team To Investigate Bulawayo City Council

The government has redeployed the team that was initially sent to Bulawayo City Council to investigate the dispute that led to the suspension of Bulawayo Town Clerk, Cristopher Dube.

The team is now mandated to investigate corruption allegations that were raised against the local authority’s management.

A source to the Chronicle revealed that the five-member team was back in Bulawayo, with a task wider in scope this time. The source said:

The investigating team is back in the city. It seems their investigations will now include some management officials from council. Unlike in the past when their investigation was centred on issues relating to the suspension of the town clerk, this time the net is wider.

The development was confirmed by Bulawayo Mayor, Cllr Solomon Mguni who however confessed ignorance of the team’s latest mandate. Mguni said:

Yes, I hear they are back in town. I wouldn’t know the deficient areas which they want to probe further. I have not been briefed.

Let’s give them all the time which they want to finish their work. It’s in the best interest of everyone involved to have a thorough report.

The government earlier revealed that if BCC’s leadership was found guilty of corruption raised against them, a commission would, on an interim basis, run the affairs of the city.

Some residents are reportedly for the commission whilst the Aldermen’s Forum vehemently rejected it.
