Chasi Fails To Convince Eskom To Supply More Electricity - Report

Energy and Power Development Minister, Fortune Chasi failed to secure a deal for Zimbabwe to import more electricity during his visit to South Africa.

Zimbabwe owes Eskom, South Africa’s power utility US$27 million from power imports.

Last month, the government paid US$10 million to reduce the debt in an attempt to secure more electricity over and above the 50MW Eskom is currently supplying to Zimbabwe.

A Daily News source claimed that Chasi returned from South Africa empty-handed though reports indicate that further engagements could be fruitful;

Eskom wants concrete payment plans and strong indications from Zimbabwe that they will indeed pay the money.

The company said it has its problems and were not willing to continue supplying Zimbabwe with power without receiving significant a chunk of the outstanding funds.

Meanwhile, local mobile network operator, Econet Wireless early this week warned the government that if it fails to urgently deal with the ongoing electricity crisis, it will take drastic measures to ensure its viability.
