Zim Gems Veteran Captain Retires

Zimbabwe Netball Team, the Gems, captain, Perpetua Siyachitema has retired from the game after serving the country for over a decade.

Siyachitema was part of the team that had an impressive debut World Cup appearance which saw the Gems sliding World Rankings from the 13th position to the 8th. Speaking to the Daily News on the sidelines of the team’s welcome home ceremony in the capital yesterday, Siyachitema said:

I’m officially saying I’m now done. I’m done playing netball. I’m now going to focus on my coaching career.

I am glad I’m leaving the sport in a healthy state. I’m retiring a satisfied person. Going to the World Cup, playing against Jamaica, New Zealand and Australia was always a dream.

Of course I would also have loved to play against England but unfortunately they were not in our group.

The veteran captain also revealed that the team was underrated at the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup held in Liverpool. She said this did not kill their faith as they actually used that to their advantage by proving those teams wrong.
