The Timing Of Mupfumira's Arrest Over Corruption Raises Several Questions
UK-based journalist, Mduduzi Mathuthu, has said that the timing of the arrest of Tourism Minister, Priscah Mupfumira, over corruption allegations leaves one with lots of questions.
Mupfumira previously seemed untouchable due to her alleged close ties with President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Her arrest when Mnangagwa is in Namibia raises lots of questions.
The VP Post: In trying to answer the question, Mathuthu suggested that the arrest could have been triggered by a vacuum in the praesidium caused by the vice president Chiwenga’s poor health. Foreign Affairs Minister, Sibusiso Moyo, the husband of Lois Matanda-Moyo, ZACC Chairperson, is regarded as a possible heir to the post which Mupfumira is also said could land.
Elimination Of Kingmakers: Mathuthu also equates Mnangagwa with the ‘Prince” in Nicolo Machiavelli’s “The Prince” who is supposed to eliminate all kingmakers because of their unending demands. Mupfumira was instrumental in the ascendancy of Mnangagwa to power in 2017.
Distraction by Command Agriculture Looters: The journalist also suggests that the arrest could be a mere distraction by looters of the US$3 billion meant for Command Agriculture. He claims that the looters are very powerful and a lightweight needed to be sacrificed.

Temba Mliswa: Mathuthu also suggests that Norton Legislator, Temba Mliswa could be the other reason Mupfumira was arrested. Mliswa has been demanding for an audit of NSSA funds suggesting that Mupfumira was implicated. The demise of Mupfumira would leave Mliswa as one of a few political elites in Mashonaland West.
