Fears Abound As Medicines Diminish In Harare Amid Increase In Diarrhea Diseases

Harare City Council health facilities are reportedly running out of medicines. This is worrying considering that there are reports of diarrhoea outbreaks in the city, particularly in suburbs where cholera started last year.

This was revealed in a report to the councillors by the Health Department. The department, however, revealed that diarrhoea cases were still within manageable levels. The report read:

Our stocking levels are not satisfactory to be able to deal with and manage waterborne disease outbreaks. We have received medicines from Natpharm, but these are not covering all our needs.

Director of health services, Prosper Chonzi, also allayed fears of a cholera outbreak in Harare. Chonzi said:

There is currently no cholera outbreak in Harare. The last cholera outbreak in Harare ended in mid-November 2018. We are responding to all rumours promptly and suspected cases reported last week were cholera negative.

The last cholera outbreak that hit the Harare in September 2018 resulted in 43 deaths and over 4 000 people seeking treatment. Glen View, where there are outbreaks of diarrhoea, was one of the hotspots of the disease.

Reports suggested that burst sewers and erratic water supply were the major cause. The disease spread to Chitungwiza, Mutare and Buhera.
