Chasi In South Africa Again To Discuss Power With Eskom

Energy and Power Development Minister, Fortune Chasi, is in South Africa on a mission to persuade the country’s power utility, ESKOM to increase the amount of electricity it supplies to Zimbabwe.

Chasi revealed recently that he will be travelling to South Africa for discussions around power. He said then:

I will be travelling to South Africa soon for discussions around power.

Like I said, the fact that we paid them US$10 million three weeks ago does not mean they will resume giving us power. We still have to hold discussions.

In the meantime, I am still studying the report by the delegation which went to meet Eskom.

Chasi’s visit to South Africa was confirmed on Wednesday by Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa during a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare. She said:

It was reported that the Minister (Chasi) is currently in South Africa for electricity supply negotiations with Eskom. The nation will be appraised of the outcome of the negotiations at an appropriate time.

Zimbabwe last month paid US$10 million to ESKOM but still owes the company US$27 million.

Reports indicate that ESKOM refused to add on to the 50MW electricity it is currently supplying to Zimbabwe until the latter clears its arrears.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe owes Mozambique’s power producer Hydro-Cahora Bassa over US$40 million.
