Govt Launches Community Bakeries

The government is setting up community bakeries in rural areas as a way of making bread available to rural folk as well as creating employment opportunities for them.

Speaking at the launch of the programme in Chitomborwizi, Makonde District in Mashonaland West on Monday, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni said:

Bread and confectionery made from our nutritious ingredients will enable local communities to access nutritious bread from these local community bakeries.

Nyoni said that the programme will lead to the elimination of bread cartels resulting in low prices in the process. She added:

We want to destroy the cartels and bring the prices down.

We want to be different from other bakeries. We are going to launch provincial and districts ovens.
