Harare City Council Convenes Meeting Over The Water Crisis

Harare City Council has convened a meeting over the water crisis. The city has an acute shortage of water which has seen most suburbs going without water for days.

The city fathers attribute the shortage to a number of issues including low levels of water in water sources, scarcity of foreign currency needed to import water treatment chemicals and ageing equipment.

Harare Mayor, Councillor Herbert Gomba, announced that as a result of the issues above, the local authority was no longer capable of providing potable water on a timely basis. He projected that the crisis would extend to the year 2020 when enough rains are believed to have raised water levels in major sources.

The meeting comes after 18 councillors, led by Denford Ngadziore from ward 16 in Marlbereign reportedly petitioned Cllr Gomba, for a special council meeting. Part of the petition read:

In view of the fact that as local authorities we are mandated to provide services and if it happens that there are problems in the provision of the services, the board (council) should have an opportunity to discuss these problems in order to find solutions and make a policy decision to guide implementation.
