Harare City Council Plans To Construct Water Treatment Chemical Plant

Harare mayor, councillor Hebert Gomba revealed that the council is running a pilot project intending to set up a water chemical manufacturing plant at Morton Jaffrey waterworks.

Gomba said that the move was necessitated by the acute shortage of foreign currency required to import critical chemicals needed to purify the heavily polluted water from Lake Chivero. He said:

Due to the scarcity of foreign currency, we are facing challenges in procuring water chemicals.

We have decommissioned the Prince Edward plant.

Companies with solutions to our problems have been invited to do a pilot project test to build a water chemical manufacturing plant at Morton Jaffrey water work.

Harare City Council reportedly spends over US$2,5million every month to import water treatment chemicals.

Gomba further revealed that the council has engaged the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and the government to accelerate the construction of Kunzvi and Musami dams to deal with Harare’s water challenges.
