MDC Exert Pressure On SADC To Address The Zimbabwe Crisis

The opposition MDC has said called upon the SADC to address the Zimbabwe crisis which it fears could destabilise the whole region if the regional grouping continues to neglect it.

MDC attributes the economic and political crises to corruption and maladministration by the ruling ZANU PF.

MDC Secretary for International relations, Gladys Hlatywayo, said:

The MDC urges the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense and Security to take note of the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe is a threat to peace and security in the region and should take proactive steps to avert further deterioration and catastrophe.
The resolution of the Zimbabwean crisis has become urgent in the context of an economic meltdown, rising citizen discontent and lack of elite cohesion within Zanu PF.
The change of guard in November 2017 presented a window of opportunity for Zimbabwe to begin rebuilding following decades of economic meltdown, political instability and international isolation. Sadly, the opportunity has been squandered and Zimbabwe has further regressed politically, economically and socially. The military coup of November 2017 undoubtedly raised legitimacy questions that Zimbabweans and the international community had hoped would be cured by a free and fair election.
She observed with concern that the July 2018 elections enhanced the legitimacy issue as they were marred by many irregularities.
SADC officials previously claimed that Zimbabwe was off the SADC Agenda and that SADC had not received communication from the MDC on the matter. They had come to inform President Mnangagwa that he will be chairing the organ.
