Kirsty Coventry: I'm Devastated That The ICC Ruling Has Affected Zimbabwe Cricket Players

Former World swimming record holder and Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Kirsty Coventry, has said that the suspension of Zimbabwe cricket by the International Cricket Council has left her devastated.

Zimbabwe was suspended from ICC matches after the government allegedly interfered with the sport. The ICC also froze funding to Zimbabwe cricket domestic game. It also ordered that Mukuhlani and his board be reinstated within the next three months, pending a review of the suspension at their next meeting in October.

Some players and former players including all-rounder, Sikandar Raza, have already revealed that the suspension is likely to put an end to the careers of some players.

The minister says that the suspension of the Zimbabwe Cricket board by the Sports and Recreation Commission board which suspended a Zimbabwe Cricket board does not constitute government interference in the sport as implied by the ICC. Coventry tweeted:

There has been no Government Interference @ICC!!!, ’Minister of Sport elects SRC board (ICC do not see this as Gvt interference). SRC is not Government – they are a Public Body.

I am devastated that the @ICC ruling has affected our @ZimCricketv Players.

There is need for good governance at ZC for the international success we all want to see. Any decisions towards that should never affect the Players.

I am meeting with both Men’s and Ladies Captains today. #Urgent.
