ZANU PF Promises To Intervene After Council Demolished Residents' Houses
Zanu-PF secretary for security for children of war veterans, Blessing Makoni, has said that the ruling party will take action to help residents whose houses were demolished by Umguza Rural District Council.
The local authority on Tuesday reportedly demolished houses at Reigate Compound in Bulawayo after a long standing dispute that dates back to 2013.
The subnational government argues that the High Court in 2013 gave it the green light to demolish the houses and evict residents. Umguza RDC chief executive officer, Mr Collen Moyo, said:
There were 89 families at the compound and when the 2013 High Court order was granted, most of them left voluntarily leaving 22 who were resisting.
That place was for our road department workers but none of the people who were living there just before the evictions used to work for council. What we are doing is to protect the legal occupants, those who bought stands at the township.

On the other hand, residents argue that contrary to what the RDC is saying, the High Court actually barred the council from evicting them.
After visiting the compound on Tuesday following the demolitions, Makoni said that the ruling party will intervene and make sure that the residents are taken care of. Makoni added:
We requested the council workers to produce the document which empowers them to execute these demolitions but they directed us to the police. When we went to the police they told us that the council’s lawyer has the document. We’re yet to get hold of the lawyer.
