Pure Drop Cooking Oil Manufacturer Crippled By Load Shedding
The ongoing power cuts in the country have crippled operations at cooking oil manufacturer, Surface Wilmar.
The company, located in Chitungwiza, is now operating at below 15% of its installed capacity as a result of the load shedding.
Normally the company produces 8 000 tonnes of cooking oil per month, but it is currently producing a measly 1 500 tonnes.
Addressing Industry deputy minister Raj Modi on Tuesday during his tour of the plant, Surface Wilmar executive chairman Narottan Somani said:
There is no production. As you went through the factory, did you see workers there? Did you see the factory running? For the last 16 to 17 days, there has been no production here.

Chief executive Sylvester Mangani said that the “Zimbabwe is Open for business” mantra rings hollow with the incessant power cuts. He also bemoaned red tap associated with acquiring export licences. He said:
When we export, we have to go through the process of getting export permits. Each time we export, we have to get an export permit so it’s just a nuisance cost.
So, we have to recruit a person who has to do that. So, for us, it is just an extra person who has to chase export permits, which we think is an unnecessary
cost.
