The water crisis facing the City of Gweru prompted the Midlands provincial Joint Operations Command (JOC) to tour the city’s major water supplier, Gwenoro Dam on Monday.
Water levels in the dam are said to have receded to alarming levels due to severe drought, approximately 18 per cent.
The tour was led by Midlands Provincial affairs minister Larry Mavhima. It also included council officials and staff from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), among others.
Gweru mayor, Josiah Makombe confirmed the tour of Gwenhoro to NewsDay on Monday. He said:
They (JOC) want to assess the situation, and we hope as the council that the government will assist us with the water situation in the province.
As you know, Gwenoro can be decommissioned any time soon. There is, therefore, need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders so that we can come up with a lasting solution to our water woes.
Meanwhile, Gweru has put in place stringent water rationing measures with plans to draw more water from Amapongokwe Dam to save the situation.
